Hey, I’m Tim Wong RMT

I’m a Registered Massage Therapist, Movement Coach, and Personal Trainer.

I’ve been treating and resolving the injuries, aches and pains of Toronto’s athletic community for the last 10 years.

I’ve helped hundreds of Torontonians aim towards life-time personal bests, dominate at their sport, without sacrificing their long term health and wellness.

But it wasn’t always like that…

The trying everything I could find on the internet and social media
The costly and time-wasting treatments
The lack of results and loss of hope

I wanted to throw in the towel and stop my goals of competing at a high level in Weightlifting and Soccer

4 Types of Massage Therapy Treatments that we utilize for shin pain at the Holistic Move

Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex (PDTR)

PDTR is a specialized technique that focuses on stimulating specific proprioceptive receptors to restore proper proprioception and re-optimize muscle function. By activating deep tendon reflexes, this technique helps re-establish the communication between the nervous system and muscles, promoting stability, reducing pain, and aiding in the recovery of typical overuse injuries such as shin splints. Click here to learn more about PDTR.

Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT)

NKT is a cutting-edge technique that identifies and corrects faulty movement patterns by addressing muscle imbalances and dysfunctional movement compensations. By using manual muscle testing and precise corrective exercises, NKT aims to reprogram the neuro-muscular system, promoting pain relief, improved stability, and enhanced athletic performance for individuals with shin splints.

Active Release Technique (ART)

My Active Release Technique (ART) is a dynamic and hands-on approach that combines movement and precise pressure to treat shin splints. By targeting adhesions and scar tissue, ART breaks down barriers to healing, improves range of motion, and accelerates recovery.

Sports Massage Therapy

Our specialized sports massage therapy combines various techniques, including deep tissue massage and Swedish massage, to target muscle imbalances, reduce tension, and enhance recovery. By addressing the specific needs of athletes and active individuals, this comprehensive approach promotes optimal healing, restores functionality, and boosts your lower leg’s resilience. Frequently Asked Questions

As an RMT, I will continue to offer high-quality therapeutic massage therapy treatments. In addition, with my additional education and training in functional neurology, I can offer patients an integrative approach that often has many longer-lasting benefits. Using a functional neurology-based therapy like P-DTR, we identify the movements that cause your symptoms, perform a specific treatment, retest the same movement after treatment, then provide you with the appropriate exercises for “homework” to solidify our results. Rest assured, I am also Certified and Licensed by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.

I often hear from my patients that they have tried nearly everything to resolve their issues or meet their fitness goals. Since every case is unique, this is why I have an initial assessment appointment for first timer visitors. It allows me to understand the problem better, ask the proper questions, and recommend the best treatment for your needs.

Massage therapy for shin splints focuses on reducing muscle tension, promoting circulation, and releasing adhesions in the affected area. It can help alleviate pain, accelerate healing, and restore optimal muscle function, allowing you to recover faster and return to your activities pain-free.

The number of sessions required depends on various factors, including the severity of your shin splints and individual response to treatment. Typically, a series of sessions is recommended for optimal results. Your therapist will assess your condition and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

While some pressure and discomfort may be experienced during deep tissue massage techniques, it should not be unbearable. Our skilled therapists prioritize your comfort and will communicate with you throughout the session to ensure the pressure is appropriate and within your tolerance level.

Yes, massage therapy can play a role in preventing shin splints from recurring. By addressing muscle imbalances, enhancing flexibility, and optimizing movement patterns, massage therapy helps reduce the likelihood of excessive stress on the shins and lowers the risk of future shin splints. Incorporating regular maintenance sessions and following an appropriate exercise routine can further support prevention.

In cases of acute injury or inflammation, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional before seeking massage therapy. Depending on the severity and stage of the injury, the therapist may need to modify the treatment approach or wait until the acute phase has subsided. Your therapist will assess your condition and provide guidance accordingly.

Depending on the severity of your shin splints, your therapist may recommend modifying or temporarily adjusting your exercise routine to avoid exacerbating the condition. It’s important to communicate with your therapist and follow their guidance to ensure proper healing and recovery. They will work with you to develop a plan that allows for a gradual return to your regular activities.

Absolutely. In fact, integrating shin splints massage with other complementary treatments or therapies can often yield even more comprehensive results. Your RMT can collaborate with other sports medicine professionals, such as physiotherapists or chiropractors, to create a holistic treatment plan tailored to your needs. This approach may include exercises, stretching routines, and additional modalities to support your recovery and optimize outcomes.

The timeline for seeing results can vary depending on the individual and the severity of the shin splints. Some individuals may experience significant improvement after a few sessions, while others may require more time. Consistency and adherence to the recommended treatment plan, including any self-care measures provided by your therapist, are key factors in achieving optimal results. Your therapist will closely monitor your progress and make adjustments as needed to ensure you are on track towards recovery.

NKT and P-DTR are two advanced treatments that focus on locating the root cause of your ankle sprain and correcting the functional imbalances within the body. Using precise manual muscle tests, an experienced therapist can quickly find the root of many dysfunctions that is causing your ankle pain or discomfort and treating it.
